What is LightningVolt™
LightningVolt™ lithium batteries are a high-performance upgrade for the house battery bank that powers your truck’s electric APU. LightningVolt™ improves electric APU performance, doubling the power in your sleeper cab! These 100AH deep-cycle lithium batteries are engineered for commercial trucks and buses, but are Group 31 size, making them a good upgrade for RVs, golf carts and marine applications as well.
How Can LightningVolt™ Revolutionize Life on the Road?
For long-haul truckers who are on the road up to 300 days a year (that’s over 80% of each year!), a truck sleeper cab is a home—just one with serious power restrictions. A sleeper cab running on an electric APU usually has 4–6 hours of power if you only use small electronics and an HVAC system. This means avoiding big kitchen appliances, holding back on entertainment like a TV or games console, and rationing battery consumption so the heating or AC can keep the sleeper cab livable. The alternative is to idle your engine and burn more fuel.
Here at Roadwarrior, we realized we could do better for vital workers like long-haul truck drivers, so we created LightningVolt™—the lithium battery upgrade designed to bring more power to your sleeper cab. Compared to lead-acid or AGM batteries, LightningVolt™ offers 2× more electric APU runtime and the freedom to include more electrical appliances in your sleeper cab! With worry-free compatibility, you can also trust LightningVolt™ to work with your alternator!
Upgrade Your Sleeper Cab with LightningVolt™
Built for Repeated Deep Discharge
Using more than 50% of the stored power in a standard lead-acid battery just once, will damage it. However, LightningVolt™ features LFP battery technology that can withstand deep discharges to as low as 95% over and over again. This means you can take advantage of 2× longer battery runtimes, increasing capacity for your electrical appliances.
What this means for you?
Because so much more of the power in LightningVolt™ batteries is usable, you can run your electric APU on them for 2× longer between charges and can power more energy-hungry appliances. This is a significant improvement on the runtime an electric APU can pull from lead-acid and AGM batteries. With LightningVolt’s rapid charging feature, your alternator can fully charge the batteries faster, so you can spend less time idling and save fuel.
More Charge Cycles
LightningVolt™ batteries have many more charge cycles, meaning they last 10× longer! A traditional AGM battery can handle 200–400 charge cycles, and usually needs replacing every 1–2 years. A LightningVolt™ battery can handle 2,000 charge cycles at 95% depth of discharge and over 4,000 cycles at 50% depth of discharge. This means that depending on use, LightningVolt™ batteries can last 5–10 years (at minimum, twice as long as traditional alternatives).
What this means for you?
APU batteries are designed to be rechargeable, but there is a limit to how many times a battery can be recharged—this is a charge cycle. With so many more charge cycles, durable LightningVolt™ batteries last 10× longer. 1 LightningVolt™ battery can save you from replacing 10 traditional AGM batteries!
Idle Reduction Technology
By doubling the power in your sleeper cab, LightningVolt™ batteries can eliminate the need for idling, which reduces fuel costs while preserving the engine and aftertreatment system. Modern trucks with aftertreatment systems, built in line with EPA regulations, are not designed to handle extended low-duty cycles; this is especially true of idling, which is the lowest duty cycle. Idling can cause carbon to build up in the aftertreatment system, leading to clogging, and either more frequent services, or damage to your engine if the blockages aren’t treated.
What this means for you?
LightningVolt™ eliminates your idle times, protecting your engine and making your DPF less likely to become clogged with soot. This means fewer active and forced regens, and less unscheduled downtime for engine and aftertreatment maintenance, not to mention how much you’ll save in fuel costs!
LightningVolt™ batteries are designed for commercial trucking conditions in Canada. Built for Canadian winters, LightningVolt™ lithium batteries are designed to operate in cold temperatures and the heavy-duty design resists vibration, shock, and the elements.
What this means for you?
LightningVolt™ batteries are tough enough to handle the conditions in your truck, year-round. By upgrading your house battery bank with lithium batteries, you can make sure that your electric APU won’t let you down when you need it—no matter the season or condition!

An APU is an auxiliary power system that fuels electronics and appliances, from your fridge and TV to your laptop and HVAC system. An electric APU is one that runs on batteries not a generator. Electric APUs usually run off a set of four deep-cycle batteries in the house battery bank, rather than the starter batteries. You can find out more about the differences here. Different OEMs have different names for their electric APUs, e.g. the Freightliner ParkSmart, the Kenworth Idle Management System and the Volvo Parking Cooler System. There are also retrofitted electric APU systems, like Thermo King’s TriPac Envidia and Phillips & Temro’s IdleFree System. See the LightningVolt compatibility chart here.
Load shedding occurs when your electrical demands are higher than the available battery voltage. Your system cuts power to auxiliary components to shed unnecessary load and triggers a beeping alarm to notify the operator (you). Load shedding is designed to ensure your batteries keep just enough reserve capacity to start your engine. Upgrading to LightningVolt™ ensures you’re able to get 2× more out of auxiliary components, like your electrical appliances, before tripping load shedding alarms.
Have you ever felt like you’re camping in your truck, not living in it? Would doubling the power in your sleeper cab change the way you live in it? By doubling your electric APU’s power, LightningVolt™ can give you the quality of life you deserve on the road. Video call your family, play your x-box, use a fridge and toaster oven to make healthier meals—LightningVolt™ gives you the power to relax and recharge during your rest periods.
Because of the limited power available in a sleeper cab, truckers are forced to idle during rest periods to charge their electric APU batteries. For the average long-haul truck, idling exceeds $12,000USD/year in operating costs. Idling while stationary dramatically drives up fuel costs and excessive idling can result in large fines anywhere there are anti-idle laws, including truck stops. An idle reduction device like an electric APU is designed to solve this problem, but it can struggle to meet your sleeper cab’s power requirements when running on traditional batteries. With LightningVolt™ lithium batteries powering your electric APU, you have the power to enjoy the full rest period without needing to idle, saving you fuel, money and time.
It’s often said that an unhappy driver is an expensive driver; doubling the battery power in their sleeper cabs is the easiest route to happier drivers. Happy drivers also mean happier customers, less turnover, reduced operating costs and less time spent onboarding new drivers. On top of this, improving the efficiency of an idle reduction system like an electric APU means cutting down on essential idling. This leads to significant fuel savings across the board!
Idling your engine burns 1 gallon of diesel/hour and imposes wear and tear on your engine and aftertreatment components. For the average long-haul driver, idling adds over $12,000/year in operating costs, and that’s only while the truck is stationary! Upgrading to LightningVolt™ gives you 2× more power without idling or load shedding.
