For long-haul truckers who are on the road up to 300 days a year (that’s over 80% of each year!), a truck sleeper cab is a home—just one with serious power restrictions. A sleeper cab running on an electric APU usually has 4–6 hours of power if you only use small electronics and an HVAC system. This means avoiding big kitchen appliances, holding back on entertainment like a TV or games console, and rationing battery consumption so the heating or AC can keep the sleeper cab livable. The alternative is to idle your engine and burn more fuel. Realizing we could do better for vital workers like long-haul truckers, we created a lithium battery upgrade designed to bring more power to your sleeper cab. Drop-In Installation for Any Configuration
For Trucks with Electric APUs:
LightningVolt® integrates seamlessly to double your APU’s runtime, allowing drivers to use HVAC systems, appliances, and other electronics for extended periods without needing to idle the engine. By replacing your lead-acid batteries with LightningVolt® lithium, you gain consistent, reliable power and eliminate the need for frequent replacements. This setup minimizes engine wear and maximizes comfort, making it an ideal solution for sleeper cabs and other long-haul configurations where driver amenities are essential.
For Trucks without Electric APUs:
LightningVolt® enhances auxiliary power by replacing one or two of your lead-acid batteries, giving you up to 50% more runtime for inverters and other onboard devices. This configuration allows you to keep two lead-acid batteries for starting the engine while LightningVolt® handles all auxiliary needs, reducing the need for engine idling to save fuel and cut down on maintenance costs. The installation is as simple as swapping out two batteries in the same battery box—no extra components, relays, or wiring modifications required.
Built for Repeated Deep Discharge
Using more than 50% of the stored power in a standard lead-acid battery just once, will damage it. However, LightningVolt® features LFP battery technology that can withstand deep discharges to as low as 95% over and over again. This means you can take advantage of 2× longer battery runtimes, increasing capacity for your electrical appliances.
More Charge Cycles
LightningVolt® batteries have many more charge cycles, meaning they last 10× longer! A traditional AGM battery can handle 200–400 charge cycles, and usually needs replacing every 1–2 years. A LightningVolt® battery can handle 2,000 charge cycles at 95% depth of discharge and over 4,000 cycles at 50% depth of discharge. This means that depending on use, LightningVolt® batteries can last 5–10 years (at minimum, twice as long as traditional alternatives).
Idle Reduction
By doubling the power in your sleeper cab, LightningVolt® batteries can eliminate the need for idling, which reduces fuel costs while preserving the engine and aftertreatment system. Modern trucks with aftertreatment systems, built in line with EPA regulations, are not designed to handle extended low-duty cycles; this is especially true of idling, which is the lowest duty cycle. Idling can cause carbon to build up in the aftertreatment system, leading to clogging, and either more frequent services, or damage to your engine if the blockages aren’t treated.

An APU is an auxiliary power system that fuels electronics and appliances, from your fridge and TV to your laptop and HVAC system. An electric APU is one that runs on batteries not a generator. Electric APUs usually run off a set of four deep-cycle batteries in the house battery bank, rather than the starter batteries. You can find out more about the differences here. Different OEMs have different names for their electric APUs, e.g. the Freightliner ParkSmart, the Kenworth Idle Management System and the Volvo Parking Cooler System.
