What is a NOx Sensor?
Most semitrucks have two NOx sensors – one on either side of the SCR – that measure NOx levels in their exhaust! The upstream/ inlet NOx sensor measures NOx levels before the SCR and tells the ECU how much DEF to inject. The downstream/ outlet NOx sensor measures NOx levels after the SCR. The ECU then uses this data to confirm how well the SCR is performing and whether to increase DEF input. This helps the SCR reduce toxic nitrogen oxide particles in your semitruck’s exhaust gas!

What Problems do Detroit NOx Sensors Have?
NOx sensors have to be extremely sensitive to pick up on the changing particular levels in your exhaust, and this unfortunately means they can become contaminated quite easily. If your DD15 NOx sensor is playing up, the most likely cause is soot contamination from the aftertreatment system! If it has become smothered, it’s likely to provide inaccurate readings and trigger a fault code! Your DD15 NOx sensor could also be damaged by moisture from the exhaust, or by exposure to moisture when it was being replaced, so you’ll want to be aware of this when installing an upgrade!
