The filter captures soot and particulate matter. Your exhaust system burns off the accumulated soot by releasing a small amount of fuel into the exhaust stream. This is active regeneration, which can happen while your machine is still running. However, small amounts of soot will slowly build up, and after about 4,000 hours of running time, the DPF will be unable to clean itself. At this point, you will need to have it removed and cleaned. Though time-consuming, this is an essential process and can significantly extend the life of your engine.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n DPF cleaning can take a couple of days\u2014it\u2019s tempting to save time by trading your DPF for a reconditioned unit. Reman DPFs might well have received more wear than your original part and frequently have short or unreliable service lives.
