To mitigate the environmental impact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced mandatory Tier 4 standards for all new off-highway diesel engines and heavy equipment sold from 2014 onwards. This regulation mandates the use of emissions control devices like DPFs in all new construction equipment. This in turn boosts fuel efficiency and improves air quality on construction sites, protecting workers from breathing in toxic exhaust.

John Deere is a well-respected engine and machinery manufacturer, specializing in construction, forestry, and agriculture. What is a Construction DPF?

The exhaust from diesel-powered construction equipment includes soot and particulate matter (PM). Instead of being released into construction sites, this toxic gas passes through catalytic filters like DPFs to clean it. However, the filter has to clean itself regularly to prevent soot accumulating and clogging it.

On-highway machinery like semi trucks reach higher speeds and hence generate hot enough exhaust gas to burn away the soot which causes passive regeneration (regens). If this fails, the truck injects a small amount of fuel into the exhaust before the DPF to raise the temperature more this is active regeneration. Most off-highway construction engines rarely get hot enough for passive regens and have to rely solely on active regens!

What are the Most Common Causes of RE567689 John Deere DPF Failure?

John Deere DPFs are durable, but usually need to be replaced during your machine’s working life. How long they last partially depends on how well you look after them. For example, after 3,000-4,000 hours in typical construction machinery, and 250,000 – 500,000 miles in semi trucks, the DPF becomes too clogged with soot to regenerate. At this point you’ll need to remove it for cleaning. This can take several days, but significantly extends the life of your DPF and engine! If you keep operating with a clogged DPF, the exhaust won’t be able to pass through, creating significant backpressure. If this pressure cracks the DPF it will need to be replaced rather than cleaned.

A John Deere construction DPF like RE567689 or RE568454 can also be damaged by oil and coolant leaks and upstream engine issues. If this happens, your machine will trigger a DTC to let you know.
